Background

As a health and safety company, we provide a myriad of services and support to enhance the safety of employees in the workplace. Recently, we carried out a Health Surveillance for Ayrshire Tree Surgeons, whose job role consist of high risk activities in an unconventional workplace.

The benefits of carrying out these assessments for their employees are:

• To help detect ill health effects at an early stage and assist employers to determine if their risk assessments and monitoring are effective;
• Provide data to help employers evaluate health risks;
• Highlight any concerns regarding the effect of work on health and health on work both in short and long term;
• Provide an opportunity to reinforce training and education of employees;
• Evaluate the impact of health effects and the use of protective equipment.

The Health Surveillance

The following areas were covered in the assessment:

• Hearing test (audiometry);
• Lung Function test;
• Skin Assessments;
• HAV’s;
• Distance and peripheral vision;
• Urine for presence of glucose.

After the Health Surveillance, a health record was produced which will be retained by the employer as proof of screening being carried out. Health surveillance is only useful if systems are continuously monitored and assessments are carried out regularly. Future plans are arranged based upon the guidance provided by the HSE.
