Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health

SCQF Level 4

Learning Outcomes

Our Awareness of First Aid for Mental Health course is suitable for everyone. It provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a range of suspected mental health conditions, the skills to start a supportive conversation and when/how to signpost a person towards professional help.

Candidates will learn how to recognise and manage stress. Learners will not be able to diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but they will gain the knowledge to identify when someone may have a condition and guide them to the appropriate help.

After this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define mental health;
  2. Understand the stigma surrounding mental health;
  3. Identify factors that can affect mental health;
  4. Understand the role of a first aider for mental health;
  5. Outline the advice provided to a person suffering from a suspected mental health condition;
  6. Know when to contact the emergency services in respect of first aid for mental health;
  7. Identify signs of stress and how to manage these; and
  8. Identify signs and/or symptoms for the following mental health conditions (Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis, Eating Disorders, Suicide or Self Harm).
