Merry Christmas!

All the team at Amalgamate would like to wish you a very merry christmas, and a happy hogmanay.

2016 has been a busy, interesting and challenging year, and we’ve enjoyed working with new clients, developing our relationships with our existing clients, moving into our new office, and learning some different skills. We can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store for us.

In the meantime, we’re looking forward to spending time with our nearest and dearest over the holiday break. Our office will be closed from Friday 23rd until Wednesday 4th January, but if you need us, just drop us an email, and we’ll be in touch as soon as possible once we’re back.

HSE Health and Safety Statistics for 2016

The Health and Safety Executive has recently released its annual report on health and safety statistics for 2015-16. While it’s good to see that some numbers are dropping, it is also sobering to see that a number of statistics around health and safety have plateaued. It seems that while positive changes are still being made in some areas, there is still a lot to be done, and new approaches are needed.

Key health and safety statistics:

1.3 million workers suffering from a work-related illness, and 25.9 million working days lost.

144 worker fatalities from injury.

13,000 deaths per year linked to past workplace exposure to chemicals or dust.

621,000 injuries to workers.

Half a million workers suffering from musculoskeletal disorders.

Half a million cases of work-related stress, depression or anxiety – with 11.7 million days off.

£14.1 billion cost to economy of work-related illness and injury (excluding long-latency illness such as cancer).

They’re some pretty big numbers aren’t they? The question now is – what do we all do to improve them? We believe that customised approaches to H&S are needed for more organisations, and that having a ‘one size fits all’ standardised approach, as used by many managers who are un-trained in health and safety, just isn’t good enough. If we want to see fatality and injury rates drop further, and see an improvement in the rates of employees’ musculoskeletal problems, mental health and related absences, then companies need to invest in specialised health and safety consultants, who can provide bespoke safety management systems, and help them to focus on ergonomics and better employee wellbeing.

Taking a pro-active approach doesn’t just improve outcomes for individual employees. It also improves staff productivity, satisfaction and retention, improves business reputation, and saves money. We can help you to make changes that will provide real improvements for your organisation.

AED Training saves lives

AED training is now available as part of all our First Aid at Work courses.
From 31 December 2016, the Health and Safety Executive will require all First Aid at Work courses to include training on the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Automated External Defibrillator

At Amalgamate we are already including AED training in our First Aid courses. Prompt use of an AED (within 5 minutes of collapse) combined with chest compressions, can lead to survival rates of 50 to 75%*. This is a vast increase on the distressingly low 7% survival rate for people who have cardiac arrest outside of hospital, if they are not treated with an AED.  While knowing CPR is of great value for a First Aider, being confident in using an AED can make a huge difference in the chances of the patient surviving.

AEDs are simple to operate and very user-friendly. Nowadays they are being provided in many public spaces, such as shopping malls and sports venues. And an increasing number of workplaces are investing in them, which we strongly encourage.

Click here for more information on the use and advantages of AEDs from the Resuscitation Council (UK).

To make sure you and your staff are confident enough to treat somebody who is in cardiac arrest, book onto one of our First Aid with AED training courses today. Call 07808 391228 or email info@amalgamate-safety.com for more information.

World Mental Health Day 2016 – take time for Tea & Talk

Today is World Mental Health Day, and the Mental Health Foundation is encouraging people to take time for ‘Tea & Talk‘ – an initiative designed to raise awareness of mental health issues, raise money, and encourage people to have conversations with their friends and colleagues about their own mental wellbeing. It aims to tackle the still-present stigma around mental health, that sees many people conceal their problems, out of fear that they will experience discrimination at work and in social settings.

Up to 1 adult in 6 experiences a mental disorder, and it is estimated that a fifth of days taken off work in the UK are due to anxiety or depression. This is a huge problem, and it is predicted to only get worse. Research suggests that by 2030, mental health will be the leading disease burden globally.

It is vitally important therefore, that we have strong tactics to deal with it. In the workplace, this consists of two key strands – awareness and support. Firstly, paying attention and being aware of how employees are feeling, and ensuring that people know that their workplace will not judge or discriminate against people because of their mental health. Supporting conversations and openness around these issues can be a great first step in this.

Secondly, providing appropriate support, and access to services to help employees to deal with mental health problems, whether these are short-term or ongoing conditions. There are plenty of sources out there to help you with this. For example, the charity Mind has excellent free resources to assist organisations in supporting their staff, and helping improve mental wellbeing; and the HSE has a lot of content on work related stress and other mental health issues – these are a really useful starting point. Another important factor can be how your workplace values, and works to improve, employee wellbeing, and we can help you with that. Would you be ready for a surprise site inspection?

The HSE has just announced that surprise site inspections will be taking place during the period from 3rd of October to 4th of November. Sites that involve refurbishment or repair works will be targeted, and at each site inspection, inspectors will be checking that safety risks are being properly and effectively managed. Things they’re looking for include:

  • exposure to dust, noise and vibration
  • awareness of asbestos risks
  • maintenance and inspection of plant and equipment
  • general housekeeping of sites – trip hazards, clear entry and exit routes etc.

Where serious breaches of legislation are found, immediate enforcement action will be taken. So it’s a good time to ask yourself – if an inspector did a surprise site inspection at your site today, what would they see? Would they be satisfied that you were doing everything necessary to maintain a safe working environment? If the answer is no, or you’re not sure, it’s time to contact us. Our experienced safety professionals can visit your site and give you clear guidance on what steps you need to take to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation.

Don’t wait for the HSE to arrive, get prepared now – call 0141 2440181 or email info@amalgamate-safety.com

Should the HSE Change its Guidance on Managing Risks to Pregnant Workers?

An  interesting article  posted recently has commented on a group of MPs that are attempting to get the HSE to change its guidance on managing risks to pregnant workers, recommending that they incorporate into existing guidance a new requirement for employers to carry out individual risk assessments. This comes in the light of news that 1 in 25 mothers have to leave work due to a failure by their employers to deal with the risks that they face. That’s estimated to affect approximately 21,000 women, a startling figure.

And that’s not the end of the bad news. A report released earlier this year by the EHRC and Department for Business, Innovation and Skills found that maternity discrimination had increased dramatically in the past decade, despite the introduction of the Equalities Act in 2010.

Clearly steps need to be taken to counteract this, and giving a clear message to businesses that they must be meeting the health and safety needs of pregnant employees is crucial.
